Intune in plain words: managing employees' laptops and phones
When a team has a dozen laptops and phones, the question "who looks after them" comes up by itself. Intune answers it.
What it is
Intune is a Microsoft service for managing devices and apps. It is included in some Microsoft 365 plans, for example Business Premium, so it is often already paid for.
What it can do
- Security policies: password or PIN, updates, disk encryption (for example BitLocker).
- Installing and updating apps without user effort.
- Conditional access: mail and data only from devices that meet requirements.
- Remote lock and wipe if a device is lost.
- Fast onboarding of new employees and tidy offboarding of leavers.
How devices are enrolled
A device is registered in Intune, usually by signing in with Microsoft 365 or automatically on the first start of a new laptop. Then policies and apps arrive on it.
Where to start
- List the devices and who uses them.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for everyone.
- Define basic policies: encryption, updates, screen lock.
- Set up deployment of the main apps.
- Describe the process for an employee joining and leaving.
