Smart home: where to start (Home Assistant, Zigbee, Tuya, Matter)
A smart home is easy to start and easy to spoil: buy ten incompatible devices with ten apps. Here is an order that works.
1. Scenarios first, devices second
Write down what you want to automate: hallway light at night, heating on a schedule, leak alerts. Choose devices for the scenarios, not the other way round.
2. One brain for everything
Home Assistant joins devices of different brands and works locally: automations do not stop without the internet. That helps you avoid dependence on individual vendors' clouds.
3. Protocols
- Zigbee: a reliable low-power network, needs a coordinator. Good for sensors, bulbs and buttons.
- Wi-Fi devices (Shelly, Tuya): simple but load the Wi-Fi and often work on 2.4 GHz only.
- Matter: a new compatibility standard. Support is growing but check specific devices.
- Wired: the most reliable for critical things (heating, pumps).
4. The network matters more than the bulbs
Dozens of devices make demands on Wi-Fi. A good network with a separate segment for smart devices saves you from most strange failures.
5. Start small
- Leak and smoke sensors: safety without complex setup.
- Light with motion sensors in the hallway.
- Sockets with energy monitoring for appliances.
- Heating on a schedule once you have got the hang of it.
6. Backups and updates
Back up the system settings and update it regularly. Keep notes on how to restore everything, because without them the house becomes a hostage of one person.
