WooCommerce is slow: what to check first
A store is slower than a regular site: the cart, prices and users cannot simply be cached. So the optimisation order is different.
1. Hosting and PHP
Weak hosting and an old PHP version slow everything. Use a current PHP version with OPcache and enough memory.
2. Cache
- Page cache for the catalogue and articles, but exclude the cart, checkout and account.
- Object cache (for example Redis) speeds up database queries.
- A CDN for images and static files.
3. Database
Clean temporary data (transients), extra revisions and old sessions. Newer WooCommerce versions have a high-performance order storage (HPOS) that relieves the database.
4. Plugins
Every plugin adds queries and code. Disable the extras, replace heavy ones with lighter ones and check that none duplicate each other's features.
5. Images
Product photos in WebP or AVIF, at the right sizes and lazy-loaded for anything below the first screen.
6. Search and filters
The default search is slow on large catalogues. Database indexes, a dedicated search engine and size-limited filters help.
7. Cron and background tasks
The task scheduler can load the server on every visit. Move it to a system cron.
