An AI agent for business: how it works, what is possible and where the limits are
AI agents promise a lot. It helps to understand what they are made of and where a human is needed.
A bot and an agent
An ordinary bot follows pre-set scenarios. An AI agent understands free text, looks for the answer in your data and can take actions: check an order status, book a client, create a request in the CRM.
What it is made of
- A knowledge base: price list, terms, instructions, answers to standard questions.
- Tools: access to the CRM, calendar, store through secure integrations.
- Rules: what the agent may and may not do and when it hands the conversation to a human.
- A log: all conversations are kept for review and improvement.
Where an agent is really useful
- Standard customer questions at any time.
- Pre-qualifying requests.
- Reminders and order follow-up.
- Helping employees find internal information.
Risks and limits
- Wrong answers: without limits on your data an agent can make things up.
- Privacy: what exactly goes into the language model and where it is stored.
- Complex and emotional situations need a human.
- Answer quality must be checked regularly.
How to start without harm
- Pick a narrow task and one channel.
- Prepare 30-50 real customer questions as a test.
- Enable human handover by default when the agent is unsure.
- Review conversations weekly and fix the knowledge base.
